NOTA BENE: students who register for module 2 as well of the course shall prepare a single essay of 3.000 words at the end of both modules.

Programma
Some time ago, Martin Chanock (1985) defined law as the cutting edge of colonialism. Long-lasting changes in international relations and in daily-life arrangements demanded, in fact, the implementation of institutional and normative frameworks, sometimes of a planetary scale. Today, a similar role can be attributed to the regulatory regimes that globalization is diffusing in the Global South. Focusing in Latin America as a case in point, this module offers a critical account of the transformations that are taking place in the juridical, political, and economic glocal forms of governance. The dissemination and implementation of global regulatory regimes will be exemplified in the fields of constitution building, democratization and the rule of law, international economic law, and human rights. To understand the kaleidoscopic social life of these regulatory regimes in the Global South, the module provides theoretical reflections based on ethnographic accounts. This balance will prevent drawing foregone conclusions about the nature and inevitability of globalization, as top-down approaches to the topic suggest. At the same time, it will show how global pressures and regimes are adopted and adapted by national and local actors.
