Obiettivi formativi
The course aims at providing high-level training to the future neuroscientists and clinician scientists who will play a key role not only in discovering the causes of neurological diseases, but also developing new treatments. The key is in understanding the value of an inter-disciplinary approach that merges research with medicine and involves the public. Translational research is, ultimately, evidence-based approaches that benefit the public.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Students will be evaluated based on the execution of a small project. They will be divided in teams (inter-disciplinary teams) and will be asked to develop a disease-specific training Center and/or a project focused on one brain disease going through the translation of the scientific discovery to the development of therapeutics.

Programma
This course is designed to train tomorrow’s neuroscientists to apply an inter-disciplinary approach to the understanding and treatment of neurological diseases. The ultimate goal is to train scientists to think medicine and clinicians to think science, closing the GAP between discoveries made in the laboratory and the treatment for patients.
Translational science is the field of study that applies knowledge of basic research into the development of novel therapies for clinical applications. The translational neuroscience course will explore the process of translational science as it applies to brain diseases with a particular emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases.
Throughout the course, we will explore the process of translational neuroscience going from (1) discoveries of disease mechanisms (each mechanism a potential therapeutic target and/or biomarker) to (2) pre-clinical development of novel therapeutics to (3) translation into human trials. The last portion of the course will also discuss the development/establishment of disease-oriented Centers that apply the above described bench-to-bedside approach to academic health and research systems. We will learn how patient-centric Clinical and Research Integrated Strategic Programs (CRIsP) develop and function and we will also discuss the importance of delivering proper education to the patients and the public about everything we do.
Ultimately, the course will focus on inter-disciplinary areas of research and clinical care, including the need to involve and educate the patients.PART 1: Pre-clinical Discovery
Investigate disease mechanisms (genes; proteins; pathways)
PART 2: Pre-clinical Development
In vitro assays; high-throughput screenings; patient-derived cells; biomarkers
PART 3: Clinical Research
PART 4: CRISP- Integration between research; clinical care and patientsTesti consigliati e bibliografia
