Temi di ricerca
From 2008 until 2012 I led Eu-Polis, a Polytechnic research centre focused on urban systems in Europe (for more detailed information please see http://areeweb.polito.it/ricerca/eupolis/index_en.html).
Before that, I worked on the spatial organisation of cities and urban systems at a regional/global scale, starting from the topics of urban networks (on which I published an article in Urban Studies in 1993, with R. Camagni) and focusing on the Italian urban systems hierarchy at the European level (chapters in a collective book published in English by G. Dematteis and P. Bonavero in1997 and further research carried out in the framework of the SPESP and ESPON programmes).
Concerning the contents, my research activities and the most relevant related publications focus on three main fields:
1) The Italian cities in the European urban system, the European Spatial Planning and related innovations in territorial policies
On the one hand, the process of definition of a conceptual framework for urban and regional policies within the European Union has been investigated enlightening its ‘application’ to the Italian context:
- 1999, “Towards European Integration”, in G. Dematteis, P. Bonavero, F. Sforzi, The Italian urban system towards European integration, Aldershot, Ashgate, pp.161-178
and going in-depth in analysing the specificities of the Italian policies:
- 2005 (with F. Governa), "Italy and European Spatial Policies: Polycentrism, Urban Networks and Local Innovation Practices", in A. Faludi and U. Janin Rivolin (eds.), 'Southern Perspectives on European Spatial Planning', European Planning Studies, special issue, 13 (2), March, pp. 264-283;
- 2004 (with F. Governa), “Territories in action, territories for action. Territorial recomposition in Italian urban and territorial policies”, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Volume 28, Issue 4, Dec., pp. 796-818;
- 2004, “Polycentricity in Italian policies”, W. Zonneveld et al. (eds.), ‘Polycentric urban development across Europe’, Special issue of Built Environment, 31.2, 2004, pp.143-152.
On the other hand, the Italian urban system has been studied in its spatial characteristics, hierarchy, and intra-urban structure, for many research programmes (more recently, in a joint programme French-Italian “Italie, recompositions territoriales”, funded by the Ecole Française de Rome):
- 2016 (with A. Besana, U. Janin Rivolin), “Crisis and urban shrinkage from an Italian perspective”, in J. Knieling and F. Othengrafen (eds), Cities in Crisis. Socio-spatial impacts of the economic crisis in Southern European cities, Abingdon, Oxon, Routledge, pp. 190-214
- 2013, “Defining the urban economic and administrative spaces”, in K.P. Kresl e J. Sobrino (eds.), Handbook of Research Methods and Applications in Urban Economies, Cheltenham, Elgar Publishing, pp. 205-235
- 2001 (with S. Conti), “L’Europa urbana tra gerarchia e policentrismo”, Bollettino della Società Geografica, VI, 1-2, gennaio-giugno, 39-64
- 1993 (with R.P. Camagni), "Network Urban Structures in Northern Italy: Elements for a Theoretical Framework", Urban Studies, vol. 30, n. 6, pp. 1053-1064.
2) New Regionalism and (new) regional policies
In the context of the ‘renaissance’ of regions in the Western countries under globalisation, the Italian path to the New Regionalism has been explored with regard to the constitutional reform carried out in Italy in 2001:
- Questioning new regionalism from an Italian perspective, or the resistible rise of Italian regions. Pôle Sud, (1), 43-61.
- 2013 (with D. Luca), “Teorie regionali e regioni istituzionali. Per un’ontologia del rapporto tra spazi di governo e spazi di azione collettiva”, Rivista geografica italiana, 120(13), pp. 209-224
- 2013 (with U. Rossi), Rapporto Annuale 2013. Politiche per il territorio (guardando all'Europa), Società Geografica Italiana, Roma, pp.1-115.
- 2012 (with F. Rota), “Aims, functions and structures of European Investment Promotion Agencies. A Comparative Analysis”, in N. Bellini, M. Danson and H. Halkier (eds.), Regional Development Agencies: The Next Generation? Networking, Knowledge and Regional Policies, London, Routledge, pp. 187-205.

3) The cultural economy of cities and related urban policies
Within this last topic, since the last years I have been working on the role of institutional and informal practices of cultural production in the city, investigating the relationship with the issues of social cohesion at the neighbourhood level:
