Abstract
This conversation confronts the foundational premise of poetry as the ultimate marker of uniquely human consciousness. Historically, poetic composition has relied on elements of “automatic” creation—from the spiritual inspiration of the muse to mechanical aids like rhyming dictionaries—and the algorithm is merely the latest collaborator. We will explore the current state of AI and poetry, examining contemporary work where human poets actively integrate AI-generated text. The discussion addresses the emergence of sophisticated AI pastiche and the increasing difficulty for human readers to reliably distinguish machine-written verse. Furthermore, we will delve into the technical limitations AI faces, particularly when navigating the lack of formal constraints in free verse, and whether success varies across different linguistic systems. Finally, the conversation will pivot to consider AI's utility as an objective tool for the detailed analysis of poetry, shifting its role from mere creator to critical aid.
